She pulled her purse from the ground and started digging around in it, looking for Susan’s blankie and her teddy bear from her Daddy, handing them to Steph as she pulled them out of the bag. “Put the blanket around her, and give her the teddy bear. She’ll start cuddling it after a minute or two.” She said, loving how adorable he looked holding the little baby.

Stephen tilted Susan up with one arm, wrapping the blanket under the small girl with his free hand. He slowly lowered her head back down, and folded the sides of the blanket up around her. Reaching out, he took the teddy bear from Is, placing it next to Susan. He just watched while she slept, and Isla was right, soon after the teddy bear had been placed down her small hand and come out to grab it. He smiled down, before looking up at Isla and whispering, “How did we not wake her up, with the playing and such?”

“The lyrics came perfectly.” She said, blushing and looking at him. “I just can’t get the damn chords.” She said, throwing her guitar pick across the room, scaring a few people that were still sitting in the lobby. “Here,” She said, holding Susan out to him. “Hold her. I need to get something out of my bag.” She said, finding an excuse to have him hold her. She liked seeing him with her. It was cute.

“Yeah,” he said nodding, “Sometimes things happen that way. Let me think about it, I’ll come up with something,” He was still trying to come up with something when she handed him Susan. He adjusted himself on the seat, making sure he could hold her right. He looked down at the small child. She was still asleep and he could feel her steady breathing against his arm and chest as she moved with it.

She played the chords, strumming slowly, trying to listen to it as she played. The music played softly, and it came together nicely, but it was still missing something. “It still needs something…It needs…Dammit, I don’t know what it needs.” She said, sighing and putting down the guitar. Susan was still asleep in the carseat and she reached down, picking her up, and holding her closely. She looked up at Stephen, not sure what to do. “Why is it so hard to finish this damn song?”

Stephen listened while she played the song, and nodded in agreement. It still didn’t sound quite right. He frowned a little, wishing he had gotten it, and he continued to think. He watched as she she picked the small child up, and he smiled.  ”I don’t know,” he said shrugging at her question, “Sometimes things just come to you, sometimes they don’t”

“I don’t know. It’s like, I can hear it in my head, but I can’t seem to get it down on paper, you know?” She asked, resting her chin on her palm, and looking up at him. She wasn’t sure how to fix the song. It was slow and sweet, but she wasn’t sure how well it was coming along. “I like it slow. It’s emotional and it means a lot, and I don’t want that overpowered by the chords.” She said, giving him a half smile. It was already later than she thought it would have been, and with Susan sleeping in her carseat at Isla’s feet, she wasn’t sure how much longer she could sit her playing, even if it did help Susan to sleep. “The chords need to stay soft.”

Stephen closed his eyes, trying to think. Maybe she could hear it, but he was just going to have to guess until he hit something. He thought it over, going through the lyrics and even humming a few bars to himself, but nothing was coming. He looked down at his guitar, trying to come up with something. He was blanking, it just wasn’t coming. And then, he thought he had got it, the idea arriving at the last second before he was about to give up, like usual. “Alright, change the C to a Cadd9 and the E to an Em, and I think you might have something,”

“Hey.” She said, leaning over and kissing him softly on the lips, looking down at the paper she was writing on. “I have these lyrics, right? Well, I can’t get the chords down. Help me, babe?” She asked, batting her eyelashes and looking up at him sweetly. She picked up her guitar, pulling a guitar pick from the holder, and started strumming, showing him what she had so far. When she stopped after just a few chords, she looked over expectantly, hoping that he had some clue as to what to do with this. “I’m stuck.”

“Let me see what I can do,” he said, picking up the papers, and listening to her play what she had so far. He stared down at the writing, trying to think. Her words brought him out of his thoughts. ”Well have you tried just changing the strum pattern?” he asked, picking up his own guitar, “Maybe something a bit more like this,” He began to play, the same chords she had used, but switch a few up strokes to down and vice versa. “That, or do you want something completely different?”
